Failed

My dear readers.

I have failed. I did not knit yesterday. I thought about it and there were times I wish I had my knitting with me but I didn't. I didn't even knit one stitch. My project stayed promptly in the bag and didn't come out at all.

I failed. And I was so close to finishing my goal. I know I was still 55 days out but in the grand scheme of things, that's pretty close.

I haven't decided what the plan is from here. Along with being at Universal, I decided that I was going to continue the long tradition of getting sick while going on vacation. I think (and hope) it's just a cold but we'll see. Being sick combined with walking around all day and of course the no sleep I get when I am sick, I'm a bit slap happy and can't really think straight.

As a sign of apology, here's a picture of the Hogwarts Express.

Fail (Day 230 KEDfaY)

I finally finished the angels and I have the next two motifs figured out but I am definitely not going to get to 50% by the end of the month. So I'm going to work on other things I need to get done like my Olympics knitting.

*SIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH*

Failure (Day 55 KEDfaY)

I knew it was going to happen eventually. I knew at some point I would fail and I wouldn't get a post up. I figured it would be sometime while we were traveling or while I was home for Christmas. I didn't expect it to be a day when I literally spent 4 hours knitting with 6 other women.

I even had a post planned yesterday. The project I'm currently working on is a sweater that has been needed to be fixed for two years now. It's just been moved from laundry to winter storage to knitting pile and back and never been fixed. The edging didn't lay right and even though hundreds of others online said the same thing, I ignored them all and didn't pay attention. So I failed there too. Yesterday though, I picked it up and went to work on it. I ripped out the old border and I'm within 4 rows and a bindoff of finishing this sweater and having it, hopefully, be wearable.

But yesterday, after getting home, I was so distracted by food and cleaning and reading that I completely spaced writing a post. 100% didn't even cross my mind.

Today is going to be a day full of Gettin' Shit Done. I have laundry to fold. Dishes to wash. Kitchen to clean. Bathrooms to clean. Office to finish organizing. Book to finish reading and an email to write about it. And of course knitting to do and write about. Today is going to be one of my busier days around the house but it's a good thing. I not only have something I need to do today, which is rare, but it's because that by this time tomorrow, my family will either be here or be within a few hours of here and that is really exciting.

But right now, I need coffee.

Dead Birds and Unraveled Hats

I found a dead bird the other day while walking on campus. I was walking home from class and cutting across the grass that everyone avoids walking in. The imposing building give a sense that everyone must be on their best behavior at all times and not walking on the designated paths is one way to not adhere to this sense of propriety. I looked down at the black mass and I didn't recognize what it was for a second. Only after I saw the little beak did I realize that it was a half-decomposed bird. It was laying on its back with its eyes closed, almost as if it were sleeping. It could've been sleeping if its ribcage hadn't been exposed.

Sometimes when we look at something, it takes us longer than we want to admit to recognize what we're really looking at. That person you know you should recognize but you just can't remember their name. A decaying bird that is unrecognizable laying, covered in mud, on the ground. That hat that you don't remember why you started in the first place.

Sometimes that hat you put time and effort into just doesn't turn out right. Or it doesn't fit. Or you don't like that color.

Instead of a hat that that pile of yarn used to be, it is now just a pile of yarn reminding me of a failure. I don't recognize it as a hat or that it used to be a hat even if it does still have some hat-like characteristics. To me it is a series of mistakes that resulted in a flawed finished product.

When I started that project, I didn't intend for it to be a failure, for it to sit in a box, never to be worn. I started it in hopes of having a new favorite hat to wear. No one starts something with the goal to fail at it. We start things with the hope that we will accomplish something, that we will be a better person for having finished our task. I might've learned something from this failure but I couldn't tell you what it might be. I know know that I messed up. I fucked something up and it's wrong. It's hard to recognize that you failed. It's even harder to accept that you failed.

Failure might be the most unexpected thing I've had to deal with in life and every time I'm faced with it, it's just as hard to swallow as that first time I failed.
